Castor Oil Benefits
Castor oil is a vegetable oil derived from the Ricinus communis plant. Castor Oil has been used for hair and skin health, topical application is recommended. Castor oil packs are popular for pain relief and inflammation, let’s discuss how you can use them!
EXTERNAL USES OF CASTOR OIL:
Castor oil by itself is thick and messy, but a castor oil pack can allow the oil to seep into the skin without the mess, and can be left on for 2-12 hours per use.
Castor oil pack kits are available online, I use this one!
but let’s unpack how you can use it with and without the pack.

Castor oil for the gut!
Castor oil has several potential health benefits. It is widely recognized for relieving constipation by activating the smooth muscles in the gut to stimulate bowel contractions. A small clinical trial showed it improved stool consistency and reduced straining in elderly patients. And a 2015 in-vitro study indicates castor oil has anti-candida properties, although more research is needed to confirm its effects in humans.
As castor oil also has strong anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, it is often traditionally prescribed in Ayurveda for problem skin and hair conditions like acne, dandruff & psoriasis, and for the healing of external wounds. Modern medical ointments for wounds and sores also often contain castor oil.
Castor oil is also often included in medicinal liniments, helping to relieve inflammation and joint pain associated with conditions like tendonitis or rheumatoid arthritis. This is partly due to its hot and penetrating qualities which help to increase circulation and remove lymphatic stagnation. A 2009 trial found that castor oil was nearly as effective as NSAIDs in relieving osteoarthritis pain, without the negative gastrointestinal side effects.
INTERNAL USES OF CASTOR OIL:
Taking the liquid orally is more effective for constipation and joint pain, though topical application is still an option. It’s important to note that oral use may cause diarrhea, so consult with your healthcare provider before trying it. Eastern healthcare providers have been using it for internal use for hundreds of years, but Western healthcare providers do not advocate for this! As always check with your provider, and if it happens to be us, let’s discuss at your next appointment!
