Get Your Mouth Ready for the Holidays!

Dental health is critical to your whole health. After the gut, the 2nd largest microbiome in the body is located in the mouth!

The oral microbiome is shaped by exposure to environmental factors, including diet and eating habits, temperature, oral hygiene practices, and the use of antibiotics.

The oral microbiome also experiences states of dysbiosis, which can lead to oral disorders like periodontal disease and dental caries as well as systemic illnesses such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, and other related circulatory diseases.

Conventional dentistry focuses on brushing, flossing, mouthwash, fluoride applications, and visiting a dentist several times a year for cleanings, but Functional dentists consider how oral health may impact whole health and vice versa.

One critical distinction is the recommendation for Fluoride…..

In September of this year, after a nearly decade-long court battle between the EPA and anti-fluoride groups, including the nonprofit Food & Water Watch…. a judge ruled that fluoride poses a risk to human health, particularly to the developing brains of children. Some of the specific human health risks:

Acne and other dermatological conditions
Arterial calcification and arteriosclerosis
Bone weakness and risk of fractures
Cancer of the bone
Osteosarcoma
Cardiac failure
Cardiac insufficiency
Cognitive deficits
Dental fluorosis
Diabetes
Early puberty in girls
Electrocardiogram abnormalities
Harm to the fetal brain
Hypertension
Immune system complications
Insomnia
Iodine deficiency
Lower fertility rates
Lower IQ
Myocardial damage
Neurotoxic effects, including ADHD
Osteoarthritis
Skeletal fluorosis
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
Thyroid dysfunctionDistrict Court Judge Edward Chen ruled that the EPA must take regulatory action to address the risk. He found that the EPA had not adequately addressed the concerns under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), which gives the EPA the authority to regulate chemicals that pose an unreasonable risk to the public.

The ruling could have a significant impact on the practice of adding fluoride to drinking water in the United States, which affects more than 200 million Americans.

Some states/communities have already taken action to remove fluoride from their water supply. (but we have a long way to go)

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME?

  1. REMOVE FLUORIDE (and other endocrine disrupting toxins) from your drinking water by using a high grade water filter

  2. Adopt the iBiome oral microbiome protocol, we recommend doing this at least 2x/day:

    1. Tongue Scrape. Tongue scraping can help prevent cavities by removing harmful bacteria from your tongue before it can spread to your teeth and gums.

    2. Instead of flossing, use soft gum softpicks, to prevent microabrasions in the gums

    3. Brush with FLOURIDE FREE TOOTHPASTE: my favorite brands are:

      1. Karix (for kids)

      2. Boka (I have mine on auto order)

    4. Ditch the antibacterial mouthwash! Most contain alcohol and other toxins that are harming your gums and oral cavity.

  3. Have you ever heard of Oil Pulling?

    1. Oil pulling is an alternative medical practice that involves swishing edible oil around the mouth and spitting it out. It originated in Ayurvedic medicine and is said to improve oral health. I highly recommend doing this at least 2-3x/week. You can use your own edible cooking oil, but I need a little mint for my oil so I purchase Organic Coco Pull with mint. Some of my patients like Banyan Botanicals Herbal Oil (available in Fullscript) and here on Amazon.

Rita Wadhwani. My best kept secret is Xylitol Gum! I added several packs to my sons’ stockings last year and they loved it.
(Also available on Fullscript!)

  • Xylitol can reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth that produces acid by up to 90%.

  • Xylitol doesn't break down like sugar, so it raises the pH level in your saliva and prevents acid from forming. This helps keep the outer layer of your teeth intact.

  • Xylitol can help your body absorb calcium, which is good for your teeth and can also help prevent osteoporosis.

  • Chewing gum with xylitol increases saliva production, which helps clear away food and reduce acid levels in your mouth
