Holistic Hair Care

Hair health can be addressed from the inside and outside. Here we discuss how to address loss of hair holistically.

Ofcourse please continue to address other imbalances (hormonal, adrenal, thyroid, or gut) at your appointment with Nurse Practitioner Rita.

But here are a few fun holistic hair tips everyone can do!

Adress micronutrient deficiencies!

  • Biotin

  • Zinc

  • Vitamin D

  • Iron

  • Vitamin C

  • Vitamin E

  • Essential fatty acids

  • Vitamin A

  • Collagen

One supplement I actually place myself on at least 2x/year is ADEK vitamin. These are your fat soluble vitamins and constitute the ones we need for healthy liver and healthy hair. Learn about how you can sign up for Fullscript here, and order yourself a medical grade ADEK supplement.

But really the important one is Ferritin. Ferritin is a protein in the blood that stores iron, which the body uses when needed. When the body is low on iron, it can borrow ferritin from hair follicles and other less vital sources. And when its too high, it can also improperly store iron and UP TRIGGER inflammation.

iBiome Patients: Make sure we are checking your micronutrient and full iron levels at least once/year!

Hair oiling, is something I have been doing since I was a small girl. Its an old Indian Ayurvedic tradition, where you saturate the scalp with hair oil, some leave on for 30-60 minutes, in the old days, women slept overnight with the oil in their hair (laying a towel on the pillow). I actually still do it and I use an old school indian hair oil called AMLA. It contains mineral oil infused with indian gooseberry, the rest is canola and palm oil. The smell is pretty strong and some dislike it, I use the jasmine scented onehere on Amazon for $9.99 (also found at your local Indian grocery store!).

However long you choose to use it for, make sure you shampoo 1-2 times to get it all out. This keeps the length and thickness of your hair.

Some folks use hair oiling gadgets and I think they are fun, they originated for the use of Minoxidil Oil, but can be gently used for Indian Hair Oil.

Derma Rollers are often used for facial skin care, but can also be used for scalp care and thinning hair. Here is a step by step instruction on how to use one!

Use your dermaroller 1x/week to start, and up to 2-3x/week as tolerated. I just ordered mine and cannot wait to start using it.

-Choose a dermaroller with 0.25-0.5 mm needle length (i.e the one I linked here). This needle length is gentle, but can still stimulate the scalp and increase absorption of hair growth products.

-Sanitize with 70% isopropyl alcohol before use.

-Make sure your scalp is clean before beginning. Gently part hair and glide your dermaroller 5x in the horizontal direction and 5x in the vertical direction. Repeat on each section focusing on areas with thinning.

-Sanitize dermaroller again after use.

OPTIONAL:

-Apply a hair growth topical caffeine serum. Massage into your scalp. Or follow use with Indian Hair Oiling.

RED LIGHT THERAPY FOR YOUR HAIR! YES! Research suggests that red light therapy may increase blood flow to the scalp, which can nourish hair follicles and stimulate them to enter the growth anagen phase.
