Red Light Therapy

 Dear iBiome Warriors,

Red light therapy has become one of the fastest-growing wellness technologies on the market.

Masks. Panels. Beds. Helmets. Wands. Blankets.

But the important question is not simply:

“Which red light device should I buy?”

It is: What wavelength am I using, what tissue am I trying to reach, and what biological response am I actually trying to create?

Lets break it down…..

 📍 R E V I E W Y O U R WHOLE WELLNESS PICTURE

Red light therapy is everywhere right now.

But most people using it cannot tell you the difference between red light and near-infrared light, what tissue either one is actually reaching, or why wavelength matters at all.

That is where I want to start.

Red light is visible and is generally used for more superficial targets such as skin and scalp.

Near-infrared light is invisible and penetrates more deeply, which is why it is used more often for muscle, joints, deeper connective tissue, and neurologic applications.

That distinction matters before we even get to dose, irradiance, distance, or device size.

RED LIGHT VS. NEAR-INFRARED LIGHT

RED LIGHT

  • Visible light

  • Commonly used around 620–700 nm

  • Because red wavelengths are absorbed and scattered relatively early as they enter tissue, they are generally used for more superficial targets such as:

    • skin

    • scalp

    • surface wounds

    • collagen and skin remodeling

NEAR-INFRARED LIGHT

  • Invisible light

  • Commonly used around 800–850 nm in many consumer PBM devices

  • These longer wavelengths generally penetrate more deeply and are used more often for:

    • muscle

    • joints

    • connective tissue

    • peripheral nerves

    • neurologic applications

Rita, This matters because, a 660 nm facial mask and an 850 nm whole-body panel may both be called “red light therapy.”

They are not delivering identical wavelengths to identical tissue depths. Wavelength helps determine where the light can go. And that is only the first variable.

HOW DOES LIGHT BECOME BIOLOGY?

Rita, LIGHT TRULY IS MEDICINE!!!

Light has to be absorbed by something before it can change cellular behavior. One of the best-studied targets in photobiomodulation is cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme inside mitochondria involved in cellular energy production.

  • Parts of this enzyme can absorb red and near-infrared wavelengths.

When that happens, mitochondrial activity can shift, influencing:

  • ATP production

  • nitric oxide signaling

  • reactive oxygen species signaling

  • calcium signaling

Those changes can then affect larger cellular processes involved in:

  • circulation

  • inflammation

  • repair

  • gene activity

ATP IS ONLY PART OF THE STORY

This is where most red-light marketing stops:

  • red light → mitochondria → more ATP

But mitochondria do much more than make energy. They also help regulate how cells respond to stress, communicate, repair damage, and adapt to changing conditions.

So photobiomodulation is not simply about “boosting energy, ” it is about changing cellular signaling……….and thats where red light shines.

“A cell does not respond to light because the panel is bright. It responds because the wavelength reaches the tissue and is absorbed by cellular targets.”

“That is why wavelength, dose, and tissue depth all matter.”

“Red light has real cellular biology and increasingly good human data. But the device, wavelength, dose, and target matter. I am much more interested in matching the intervention to the physiology than simply recommending the strongest panel on the market.”

SIZE MATTERS.

When comparing devices, check:

  • Treatment area: does it actually cover the body part you want to treat?

  • Irradiance at your treatment distance: not just “maximum power.”

  • Uniform coverage: light should reach the whole treatment area, not just a bright center.

  • Red + NIR distribution: are both wavelengths spread across the device, or only in certain zones?

  • Practical fit: face, scalp, knee, back, or full body all need different surface areas.

    • Face masks are great for aesthetics, but I am more interested in the cellular health

iBiome tip:

Choose the smallest device that fully covers your target area at an effective dose.

WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS WHEN YOU CHOOSE A DEVICE

Do not shop by brightness, LED count, or the words “medical grade.”

Look for:

  • Wavelength
Red and near-infrared light reach different tissue depths.

  • Target area and whole body are not the same thing
Face, scalp, joint, muscle, and whole-body exposure are not the same treatment.

  • Irradiance
How much light reaches each square centimeter.

  • Distance
Device output changes with treatment distance.

  • Time
More is not always better. Photobiomodulation has a dose response.

  • Surface area
A larger panel gives you more coverage, not automatically a stronger treatment.

THE iBIOME WAY

Red light therapy is not simply about buying the most powerful panel.

It is about matching the wavelength, dose, and treatment area to what you are actually trying to influence.

The biology is in the dose.

WHY MITOCHONDRIA MATTER IN RED LIGHT THERAPY

Mitochondria are usually described as the cell’s “powerhouses.” That is true, but incomplete. They help regulate:

  • energy production

  • oxidative stress

  • calcium signaling

  • inflammation

  • cell survival

  • repair

That is why photobiomodulation (red light therapy) gets interesting.

Red and near-infrared light can be absorbed by mitochondrial targets, including cytochrome c oxidase, and influence how efficiently mitochondria use oxygen and produce ATP.

But ATP is only one part of the response. The mitochondrial shift can also change nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species, and calcium signaling, which then influences how the cell responds to stress, inflammation, and repair.

THE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

Red light does not simply “charge” the mitochondria. It can change how mitochondria function and signal. And because mitochondria sit at the center of energy production and cellular stress responses, even a small change there can affect much larger biological pathways.

That is why the mitochondrial response matters more than the glow of the light. The mitochondria require nutrients (iBiome Health & Wellness patients know, we tank those up).

Injectable Peptides Available at iBiome

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as cellular signaling molecules. Depending on the peptide, they may influence pathways involved in:

  • tissue repair

  • inflammation

  • metabolic signaling

  • body composition

  • recovery

  • immune function

Peptides are not a stand-alone product or one-size-fits-all protocol at iBiome. They are prescribed only after reviewing the patient’s history, labs, goals, medications, and underlying physiology. The peptide is the signal. The biology receiving that signal still matters.

A quick note about conventional labs

Because iBiome is out of network, we provide patients a list of conventional labs they can take to their PCP and ask to have ordered in network when appropriate.

This is simply an effort to reduce out-of-pocket patient cost, especially for standard bloodwork, micronutrients, or hormone testing.

Your PCP is not obligated to order testing requested by another clinician, and coverage is never guaranteed even when a test is ordered in network. Please verify benefits and expected cost directly with your insurance plan before completing testing.

Did you know your iBiome Fullscript account goes beyond supplements? Patients are already using it for personal-care and wellness products too, including oral care, aromatherapy, skin care, relaxation products, and more.

Before buying your next wellness product somewhere else, check your iBiome Fullscript account first.

iBiome BucksLately patients have been using their iBiome bucks for 2 popular products:
